Just 2 years after the death of Cecil The Lion, his son, Xanda was also killed by a trophy hunter in Zimbabwe.

You might remember the story of Cecil The Lion, being killed by a dentist from Minnesota while on a big game hunting trip.  Cecil was a protected lion living in a park, but had wandered outside the park when he was killed by Walter Palmer in 2015.

Xanda, 6 years old, the oldest of Cecil’s cubs,  was also killed by a big game trophy hunter after he wandered just outside the Hwange National Park, not far from where his father was killed in 2015.

Xanda was killed by hunter Richard Cooke, who also killed one of  Xanda’s brother back in 2015.  His brother was only 4 years old at the time of his death.  Cooke returned Xanda’s  collar to researchers and explained to them what happened.

Cooke has not been able to reach for comment and has not revealed who the client was that paid for the hunt that Xanda was killed on.

According to a century ago there were 200,000 lions living out in the wild.  They estimate that there about 20,000 and on the brink of extinction.
