Okay friends, a lot of you heard about the new Snapchat update that introduces it’s users to Snapmap. At first, it is an alarming idea that someone could know where you’re located. Here are few things you should know about Snapmap and it’s potential dangers or confusion spots. First, we shouldn’t be afraid of technology but we should always be aware of it’s power. Privacy is a thing of the past when it comes to people we know in this world. With the extreme interconnected web the Internet weaves between us makes us feel ‘okay’ with sharing more information to our peers than ever before. The trouble areas arise when we are negligent for our own sake and our kids sake. Sure, the threat of someone finding you via a Snapmap is probably slim but it opens the door to that abyss.
With that said, here are the important factors you need to know about Snapchat’s new update:
- It’s actually pretty cool. You can search the map (even if you’re in Ghost Mode) and look at snaps that were added Publicly to Our Story on Snapchat. You can travel to any city or country or town in the world and see what Snapchat users were uploading. I spent about 15 minutes traveling the globe last night. It’s really impressive.
- You have to have the newest update to utilize Snapmap. Once you’re updated you go to the camera screen and pinch the screen. It may take you a couple pinches but you’ll get the hang of it.
- Ghost Mode. When you access the map for the first time you’ll be prompted with who you’d like to give access to your location. Here you can select “my friends,” which will be all of the people you share a follow with; next, you’ll click to Ghost Mode which means ONLY YOU can see your location on the map.
- Ghost Mode is probably best for those who have followers they don’t know because if you’re publicly giving out your location, your bitmoji will be at your location. If you have it on while you’re at home it will be in one location for REALLY LONG TIME. This opens the door to unexpected company.
I hope this list helps those of you who are a little behind the curve with technology but love Snapchat. Also, parents who have kids who have Snapchat this is an important thing to look over and go over. It’s a great example of how quickly your safety can be compromised if you don’t pay close attention.
