10 Things Every Senior In High School Needs To Know

It’s almost graduation season and seniors in high school are taking their pictures, getting their grad parties in order and making plans for their victory lap! Likely, as a senior, they’ve been waiting their entire life for this walk across the stage but it’s the next few decades that doesn’t come with a training manual.

Likely, if you’re reading this and you’re not a Senior in high school then you are looking to see if the tips are relative to your life. If you are reading this and you’re a senior in high school you probably won’t believe me but it’s true.

  1. Watch What You Put In Your Mouth – Seriously, your mouth is a precious part of your body and it’s the doorway to your health. Sure, you can eat whatever you want, drink whatever you want and nobody has ever told you that those qualities fade. (Unless, you’re blessed with an incredible metabolism.) The food you eat may be delicious and plentiful but don’t eat everything that comes your way. Do it in moderation.
  2. College Takes Work – Sure, you breezed through your high school days. You barely paid attention, you passed notes, sent text messages, ignored your teacher and some of your assignments but still managed to get to walk the stage. Kudos. It won’t be as easy in college. It’s not because the classwork is hard it’s because going to class can be hard. You’ll be lured into late nights with friends when you have an early morning class and that makes going to class hard. If you don’t go to class, you’re probably going to fail.
  3. Don’t Text And Drive – If you are making it a habit of texting while you’re driving down the street from your house to your friend’s place or from school to the house, you need to stop. I’m not even joking. This is one of the most dangerous things you can be doing and you’re probably going to be spending more time on the freeway and texting at 70 mph is a death wish. Don’t be an idiot. Put the phone down.
  4. Don’t Snapchat And Drive – We get it. You want to look cute, you want to shoot a dance video, you want to look cool but you can do that when you’re parked. Not while you’re driving down the road. You won’t be starting any Snapchat streaks when you’re in the hospital because you were trying to be cool and Snapchat and drive. Just don’t do it.
  5. Your Parents Know Best – Yeah, yeah, yeah, you don’t want to listen, they’re not cool, they’re old fashioned, they don’t know you like your friends do but they have done it all before. They have lived more life than you have and they DO KNOW BETTER. Maybe, you can rephrase what they tell you but trust them. Treasure them. You don’t know how much longer you’ll have them.
  6. Don’t Be A Jerk – Yay, woohoo, congrats you graduated high school! Way to go! Just because you made it this far doesn’t give you the right to be a jerk. Use manners, be polite, respect people, respect your elders and don’t be a jerk. Being a jerk won’t get you anywhere in life other than the curb.
  7. Get A Job – Unless you’re in position to not have to work because the Lord has blessed you and your family with the funds to not have to work, go get a job. You need to work to make money and learn responsibility. I know, you don’t want responsibility but it’s better to learn it now while it’s easier. The last thing you want to do is be out on your own and not like to work. Nobody wants to work but everyone has to work. Be a team member. Plus, you’ll make new friends that may last a lifetime.
  8. Pick Your Friends Wisely – You’re the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. Think about the 5 people you’re around the most and that’s who you are. You mimic others without realizing it and if you’re around people who act terrible more than not then you’re going to act terrible. Like the old saying goes, “Tell me who you run with and I’ll tell you who you are.”
  9. Relax – Not everything has to happen right away. Not everything has to be immediate. Some of the best things in life you have to wait for and that’s okay. Don’t fee like you need to do everything in one giant swoop. Enjoy your freedom while you have it but don’t take it for granted. Stress will be there when you get older so don’t let minor things stress you out. Most of the things you worry about today won’t matter in 5 years.
  10. Pray – Even if you don’t want to go to Church, even if you don’t want to say it out loud or at the dinner table, pray. Pray before bed or pray when you’re sitting by yourself. You don’t have to ask for anything in particular or say a particular prayer but talk to God. Let Him know that you know He is there for you. Having the smallest bit of faith and taking the smallest moment to acknowledge it will make all the difference in your life.

I risk coming across as a Dad (I am one) and some of these may sound cheesy or may not make any kind of sense but trust me. I’m speaking from experience. These things will save your life, save your soul and save you money. In the end, our lives are ours to own and operate and if you pay attention to these ten things things you’ll find yourself in a happy place more often than a sad place.

As I was writing this I came up with an 11th tip.

Dance. Even if it’s by yourself in your bedroom or at a club where you’re acting a fool, dance. Dancing is one of the purest forms of expression regardless of how good or bad you are at it. It also feels good. Good luck and congratulations!
