CAN I GET AN AMEN: Neighbors Buy Retired Racehorse For Stable Boy Who Saved Its Life A Decade Ago

Time for our “CAN I GET AN AMEN” story of the day!  At “THE MORNING BULL” we believe in the power of positivity.  We believe there are more good people than bad in the world, and we believe that goodness should be celebrated when you find it!

It’s Rodeo Time…so maybe I just pay more attention to stories about horses, but this horse tale (see what I did there) caught my eye.  Ellerslie Tom is the horse, and this is his story.  Ole Tom was a racehorse.  A talented and fast race horse, but he couldn’t stay out of trouble.  He had a knack for acting like one of our rodeo broncs as he kept throwing off some the top name jockeys at the beginning of races.  So his owners were about to give up on him and possibly have him shipped to an overseas slaughterhouse when a stable boy name Paul Sheldrake asked the owner is he could work with Tom.

Paul said, “…everyone thought (this horse) was a lunatic and people were scared of him. He had a terrible temper”  He continued, “It took me a while but I found a way of befriending him and letting him know he was safe with me. I would talk to him all the time and he understood my language, Before long I loved him and he knew it.   Paul worked him into shape and Ellerslie Tom went on to win nearly 100,000 dollars over his next few races…but that’s when the owners saw it as a chance to cash in on their investment and sold Tom to another stable.

That was 10 years ago…After leaving Paul, Tom on won one more race and has been retired since 2011.  Paul continued working with horses, and started a family, but said this cantankerous old horse was the one he couldn’t forget about and one he told all his friends about…

So, when a friend of Paul’s saw a horse with this distinctive white blaze down the face, she knew is it Ellerslie Tom.  And knowing that Paul and his wife had just had a baby she knew what she had to do – so she got in touch with some other horse owners and overnight they raised enough to buy  Ole Tom and gave him to Paul as a new dad gift.

When they pulled up with the horse,  Paul said he couldn’t stop the tears at seeing his beloved horse again.  Paul said: “He’s my favorite of all the horses I’ve looked after – I can’t thank everyone enough do to such a lovely thing for me.  “It is fantastic to have Tom back and I will look after him until the end of his days.”  Never underestimate the bond between an animal and their person…

So where ever you are…in the kitchen or in the car – Can you throw your hand in the air… “CAN I GET AN AMEN”… – Focused on The Good it’s the Morning Bull, and if you ever see a story you think would make a great amen – email it in to us at george@thebullhouston
