CAN I GET AN AMEN: Couple Married 78 Years Says The KEY is NOT LOVE!

Time for our “CAN I GET AN AMEN” story of the day!  At “THE MORNING BULL” we believe in the power of positivity.  We believe there are more good people than bad in the world, and we believe that goodness should be celebrated when you find it!

Valentine’s  day, a time we celebrate love – but Morrie and Betty Markoff say LOVE has nothing to do with their lasting relationship, believed to be one of the longest in world.   Betty and Morrie have been married…MARRIED for nearly 80 years.  Betty is 103, and Morrie likes to brag he is her MUCH YOUNGER HUSBAND at 100, although he says he’s trying to pass for 90.  And the couple say that everyone wants to know the secret to this martial success.  The couple if featured in the book, “Aging Gracefully”

“We’ve been together for nearly eight decades, and we still haven’t killed each other!” Morrie says.

“Though we’ve tried a few times,” chimes in Betty. “We’ve had plenty of run-ins, oh my God …”

But she is quick to say that Morrie has never laid a hand on her nor she on him.

But whatever arguments they used to  – well now they both say  “..it’s peaceful,” The interviewer for the books aid the two were constantly holding hands, or touching each other’s hair or face during the interview and a for a secret to their long marriage Betty says, “Just don’t let every complaint turn to anger. Tolerance and respect (and luck).”  She added “ And you’ve got to like them.”  She did surprise the author of the book when she said that in their nearly 80 years of marriage Morrie would never use the word love.  When asked Why not the word “love”? Morrie replied, “to me, love is possessive; it’s controlling and demanding. The word that I would rather use instead is ‘caring’. “

The two also said that laughter is a big part sharing the story of when they got married – They had a small ceremony and when the rabbi that married them said “May the marriage be as pure as the gold in the ring(s).” Betty and Morrie “looked at each other and…burst into laughter” – they had a bought fake gold rings at Woolworths right before the ceremony.

So where ever you are…in the kitchen or in the car – Can you throw your hand in the air… “CAN I GET AN AMEN”… – Focused on The Good it’s the Morning Bull, and if you ever see a story you think would make a great amen – email it in to us at george@thebullhouston
