Today was the first day anyone got to try out the “Journey To Mars” ride in Discovery Green as part of Super Bowl Live! There are a few other events and booths set up for the kids and families in Discovery Green thanks to the lead-up to Super Bowl LI! Some of the astronauts from NASA Space Center in Clear Lake came out to be the first to test ride the Mars simulator!

The ride consists of a virtual reality headset with a cell phone (they provide all of this) that the rider puts on their head and then they strap into a contraption that might remind you of a carnival ride. Something like the Tower of Terror at Disney World but not quite as extreme.

As you strap into your seat with your virtual reality headset in place you begin to lift off into outer space on your Journey To Mars. The simulator begins to raise the seats until they reach the top of the ride. As the rider explores Mars through the virtual reality headset the wind begins to hit their face.

Considering your reality is being seen through the headset you can’t tell that you’re now more than 50 feet in the air with your feet dangling below! Then, when it’s time to head back to Earth for the Super Bowl you feel the dramatic free-fall from the top to the bottom. The effects of the Virtual Reality experience and the real life dropping experience combines for a wild and fun experience that is sure to make you smile. And maybe let out a little scream.

Be sure to download the Super Bowl LI App to your smart phone so you can sign the waver ahead of time to knock down the wait time on the day of your ride.

Here’s a video of our astronauts from NASA trying out the ride!
