Amazon has joined a group of other major retailers across the country who will participate in a trial program that allows shoppers to buy online with their government benefits.

It has been announced that the US Agriculture Department approved for seven major retailers to participate in the SNAP program which allows them to accept food stamps for products and/or services.

Initially, only shoppers in Maryland, New York and New Jersey will have this option but if successful you could see this open up all across the country. Over 20 million children benefit from the SNAP program each year and this is expected to help the less fortunate get the help they need.

This could be a huge breakthrough for the accountability of welfare programs and how much money is spent. It could lead to a digital currency instead of a paper/card currency. For more information check out ABC13’s report.
