If you have a love affair with avocados then you are about to be a little bit brokenhearted. (Or a little short on cash.) It appears that the avocado is preparing for a hike in price. Perhaps, because of the exponential number of people asking for extra guac at Chipotle or the health nuts who eat it on every thing they can think to slather it on.
According to a San Francisco paper, it’s a combination of a lot of things. While we do have locally (in America) grown avocados most of them come from South of the border in Mexico. It seems that Americans are eating more avocados than ever before and the Mexican growers are taking notice. They’re beginning to hike their price for the delicious fruit.
Apparently, 2 or 3 countries provide the entire world with avocados! The drought has caused California growers to produce fewer avocados than previous years and that decrease is increasing the amount needed from our neighboring countries. This is driving the price up, also.
Last year, the USA imported 886,392 tons of avocados from Mexico! Basically, the bad news is this: avocado prices are going to go up because of a lack of production and we might not see the effects for another couple of months but you can guarantee it’s coming. So that $15 plate of nachos at El Tiempo is going to go up a little more if you want that guacamole on top!
I would say stock up but that likely won’t help you. Might as well just plant an avocado tree in the backyard and hope for the best.
